Parasitics of Orthocyclic Windings in Inductors and Transformers

نویسندگان

چکیده

Orthocyclic winding in magnetic components is common both laboratory prototyping and mass production, especially for round wires with curved edges. However, its impact on parasitics, i.e., capacitance, ac resistance, leakage inductance, has not been systematically investigated yet. Omission or inaccurate calculation of these parameters leads to current ringing, additional losses, even abnormal operations. In this article, three modified formulas parasitics orthocyclic windings are proposed, the impacts comprehensively studied. Magnetic field distortion air-gap effect analyzed compensated. The verified by finite-element method (FEM) simulation experimental results. Finally, normal compared, conclusions listed illustrate parasitics.

Magnetic Field Evaluation in Transformers and Inductors

This topic reveals, by means of magnetic field plots, many of the problems that occur in magnetic device structures, utilizing both conventional cores and planar cores. The understanding gained from field plots points the way to reducing leakage inductance and winding losses that can otherwise be prohibitive. The reader is referred to the Unitrode/TI Magnetics Design Handbook TI Literature No. ...

Stacked Inductors and Transformers in CMOS Technology

A modification of stacked spiral inductors increases the self-resonance frequency by 100% with no additional processing steps, yielding values of 5 to 266 nH and self-resonance frequencies of 11.2 to 0.5 GHz. Closed-form expressions predicting the self-resonance frequency with less than 5% error have also been developed. Stacked transformers are also introduced that achieve voltage gains of 1.8...

Selection of copper against aluminium windings for distribution transformers

Copper and aluminium are the two conductors most commonly used in transformer windings. This study presents a comprehensive comparison of distribution transformers built either with copper or with aluminium windings. The comparison is based on winding material conductivity, density, cost, connectivity, oxidation, machinability and behaviour under short-circuit. Additionally, a parametric analys...

Systematic Analysis and Modeling of Integrated Inductors and Transformers in RF IC Design

An efficient modeling technique and a novel CAD tool for the accurate prediction of the performance of integrated inductors and transformers is presented. This generic and process-independent approach generates lumped-element models that easily plug into the RF IC design flow. Their accuracy is established through comparisons with measurements of numerous fabricated inductor structures. This pa...

Design and operation of a protection system for transformers with superconducting windings

Power transformers with superconducting windings need a protection system to prevent damage to the low-loss superconducting winding by an abnormally high current. The generally accepted protection technique which uses auxiliary coils has been analysed using a network representation. The current distribution between main and auxiliary coil is expressed in terms of geometrical parameters. Experim...
